Free-to-play horror experience
Beware the Shadowcatcher is a free-to-play adventure experience from Zed_Technician. In this short first-person horror, you work to keep an old diner alive. However, just when you thought you were having new regulars, the titular Shadowcatcher follows them—and puts everyone in danger.
As an indie game, Beware the Shadowcatcher combines a lot of small elements from different genres to create its own take on horror. Imagine the casual dining simulation of The Closing Shift combined with the hide-and-seek mechanic and story progression of The Man from the Window, with the latter title also coming from the same developer.
Serve and survive
Players who’ve tried The Man from the Window would probably identify its similarities with Beware the Shadowcatcher, although it’s important to note that one is not a simple rehash of the other. It also uses anthropomorphic animals plus a scary monster difficult to explain, but with a unique story. You try to serve a family of Shadow People for consecutive nights while protecting them (and yourself) from the Shadowcatcher.
It basically goes back and forth between a dining sim and a horror game, with the game offering plenty of interactive items to help you along the way. While it doesn’t offer any backstory or tutorial, the controls are common and intuitive. It’s up to you to explore every corner of the location. Its combination of an average-looking diner and otherworldly visitors creates a familiar yet refreshing horror premise.
The game doesn’t rely on jumpscares too, although it maintains tension once the Shadowcatcher makes his entrance. Depending on your skill, you will need to prevent the otherworldly creature from coming in as you create delicious dishes for the Shadow People family. Depending on your actions, there are multiple endings for you to unlock, ensuring a bit of replayability for the game.
A top-tier indie short
Despite being a short indie game that takes place in a single location, Beware the Shadowcatcher is a great horror experience that combines horror and dining sim to great effect. You get to juggle between crafting great food while keeping everyone safe from the titular monster. It even offers a number of endings for you to explore, giving you the incentive to retry the game over and over. Recommended.
