Solve the hotel’s mystery to save yourself
At Dead Of Night is a stylistic role-playing video game wherein you must discover the gruesome mysteries behind a killer’s actions and escape with your friends. Developed by Baggy Cat Ltd., this 3D survival horror game is an FMV (full-motion video) game that blends live-action acting and 3D graphics to give a uniquely unsettling and immersive horror experience.
Similar to Alan Wake, At Dead Of Night features supernatural elements with its direct ghost encounters and utilizes gameplay that’s both strategic and puzzle-like. However, while the jumpscares here can make you flinch hard, it tends to get annoying and repetitive.
Is At Dead Of Night scary?
In At Dead Of Night, you play as Maya, a college student who’s in town for a music festival with her friends. She’s the last to arrive at their hotel and meets its proprietor, the socially-awkward Jimmy. However, while their encounter had been tamely polite, she soon discovers that he has imprisoned her friends—and that his past victims are still haunting the hotel. You must unlock their memories to survive.
Unlike most horror games, you must first uncover Jimmy’s secrets in order to free your friends and leave with them. This is done by making contact with the various ghosts in the hotel who can aid you with their memories. You have to look for clues with your tools while avoiding Jimmy—but it’s pretty difficult with how movement works in-game, as you can’t freely walk or run.
Part-horror film, part-horror game, and part-ghost hunting, the scenes here are live-action footage and add more creepiness to the game. Jimmy stalking you can get pretty terrifying, too. However, he doesn’t kill you when you get caught so that removes some of its scariness. It doesn’t help that after a while, the gameplay can become a chore. Additionally, the boatload of tutorial videos can be pretty overwhelming.
Keep an eye out for Jimmy
All in all, At Dead Of Night is an interesting horror game and can be pretty refreshing when you’ve played numerous titles from this genre. Not only does its unique visuals capture your attention and trepidation immediately, but its gameplay can be quite challenging even to those who’ve mastered the tutorials. Its only severe issue is that the repetitive process of unlocking memories can be tedious to do.
