Play the classic racing game on a modern port

The classic racing game returns as Blizzard Entertainment releases Rock N’ Roll Racing on modern hardware. Now fans of the ’90s combat-based, cart-style racer can play it for free on their desktop PCs. The game brings the nostalgic gameplay and a few added features and improvements.

Rock N’ Roll Racing comes with the original SNES and GEN versions ported over exceptionally well. It has the original aspect ratio and the sounds and features are all accounted for. Moreover, it also added a new four-player head-to-head mode and a Definitive Edition, which replaces the background music with your favorite Spotify playlist.

What can you expect from the game?

Rock N’ Roll Racing is bundled with The Lost Vikings and Blackthorne in a package titled Blizzard Arcade Collection. As mentioned, it ports these classic arcade games to work on modern consoles. If you are a fan of the original SNES and GEN versions, you can experience the original gameplay along with the original sounds and features. You can even play the game in its original aspect ratio.

However, you can also play the new four-player mode and go head-to-head in a PVP-style race.  Take note that this mode is a split-screen affair with no online multiplayer option though. You can also play the Definitive Edition, which offers all the original features of the SNES version but with a fresh 9:16 aspect ratio. It also comes with new characters for you to race as and a new soundtrack.

Fans will also be happy to know that the Definitive Edition allows them to replace the soundtrack with their favorite Spotify playlist. However, this is not recommended if you wish to stream your game on Twitch due to copyright issues. Players should also know that the SNES and GEN versions now have a save feature accessible through the overlay menu. However, this feature is not available in the Definitive Edition.

Is the game worth playing?

Overall, the new Rock N’ Roll Racing offers a fun trip down memory lane. It also allows younger gamers a glimpse of what made gaming back in the day. It offers the classic versions and provides a few new innovative features. However, a few design choices, such as the lack of save features in the Definitive Edition and lack of online play, limit the game’s potential replayability.
