Powerful media player for mobile

MX Player is a free video app developed by MX Media & Entertainment for mobile devices. It is a fully featured media player that can play video and music files of various formats. It also serves as a video streaming service that offers content for Indian audiences.

MX Player is a unique solution that is a cross between a traditional player like VLC, with the streaming offering of a service like Voot TV. Users can treat it as a capable offline video player or consume the online content it offers via in-app purchases.

Is it any good?

MX Player has been a player in the media player space for a long time now and has made big waves on the Android side of things and is the go-to option for a lot of users. One of the biggest reasons for its success is because it’s just a really good and capable video player for playing locally stored files smoothly, reliably, and with practically any format.

Since it was acquired by another company, its focus has shifted to include offering streaming services, with content that is geared towards Indian audiences. Its core features are still intact, though. Offline playback still supports acceleration on a software or hardware level. The user interface has received additional customization options but is still intuitive as ever to navigate and use with its gesture-based controls.

As for the streaming service part, you can choose from a wide variety of movies, TV shows, and even music that are divided into various categories and genres. The experience is not optimal, though. Video freeze-ups frequently happen and a persistent issue has broken casting functionality. Also, while it can be installed from anywhere, its Indian content is region-locked and cannot be accessed outside the country.

Still good, but inconsistent

In summary, MX Player is still a very capable media player for general use, and you will be satisfied using it for offline playback. With the addition of new features come issues and bugs, as well, particularly when it comes the online streaming. Also, it’s a bit odd that its content has been region-locked, considering that people from all over the world use it.
