A new take on the classic Pac-Man gameplay

BLOK BOY is a free arcade game developed by Kevman3D for PC. In this maze action title, players will take control of the titular character, with the main goal of eating all the dots to clear each level. They also need to be wary of cube-folk along the way.

Just like PAC-MAN 256 or Namco All-Stars Pac-Man, BLOK BOY draws heavy inspiration from the classic Pac-Man, while having a unique design and presentation of its own. This retro game was specifically made to be played with the ZX Spectrum 8-bit personal home computer system.

Drawing from the classic

Pac-Man is one of the longest-running and highest-grossing game franchises in history, having released various iterations across multiple generations of gamers. It’s no wonder then that it is a popular source of inspiration for many arcade-type titles even today. BLOK BOY is one such release that retains the classic and familiar gameplay while putting its own twist on the design and characters.

In playing this game, you will immediately see familiar gameplay to the classic. Your goal is to eat all the dots on the board while avoiding getting caught by the cube folk. There are 3 maze layouts with multiple levels of increasing difficulty. For controls, you can choose between a joystick or a keyboard/mouse combo. You even get a Top 5 High Scores that save our best runs.

What’s more, the developer even released the game’s source code so you can modify and tweak it to your liking if you’re familiar with coding and such. As is the case with games of its type, playthroughs are rather short. You can finish it within a few minutes depending on how well you play. There isn’t much replayability to be had, but the nostalgia it brings is undeniable.

A fun and stylish homage

In summary, BLOK BOY is a fun and stylish homage that gets a lot of things right. While it doesn’t stray away from the formula or revolutionize the gameplay, it manages to present itself in a way that helps make it stand out a bit more. However, its playthroughs are short and it doesn’t have much replayability. For fans of Pac-Man, this one is worth checking out.
