What Is Your Version of Justice?

Tyranny is a choice-driven adventure and role-playing video game wherein the fate of a subjugated world can change by your hands. Developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by Paradox Interactive, Tyranny tells your story as a Fatebinder—a higher-ranked enforcer of the law in the supposedly-evil empire’s employ. You have considerable influence upon the lands and can change its destiny depending on what you choose to do—and what you choose not to do. As a game built upon the gameplay and engine used in Pillars of Eternity, Obsidian Entertainment’s previous title, Tyranny lets you decide how this world’s future will proceed.

The Reign of an Overlord

Set in the fictional high fantasy world of Terratus, the evil Overlord Kyros has nearly completed their arduously long campaign of conquering all of Terratus and imposing their version of order through sheer force and intimidation. The last region to be claimed is Tiers and it’s brewing in a rebellious conflict between two factions: the disciplined Disfavored and the chaotic Scarlet Chorus. Kyros has elite agents called Archons, whom they’ve imbued with magic and serve as their overseers for various regions and groups under their rule. The Archon of Justice created the Fatebinders and these agents act as the judge, jury, and executioners of the people in order to restore order and reduce conflict after Kyros’ near-victory on the land. As a Fatebinder assigned to Tiers, it is your duty to handle the various factions of survivors and stamp down the rebellion in the region. Unlike the traditional RPG, however, you’re no hero—you’re either going to enforce the tyrant ruler’s reign or try to dismantle the empire from within. As an RPG, you can recruit various companions in your quest and build upon your knowledge of magic and combat. However, while Tyranny did great on the storyline full of choices and consequences, the combat with the AI could really use some reworking. If you like games that really let you shape the future of a world, this is a recommended title to try.
