Trenches is an indie game from Steelkrill Studio. This is a horror adventure game set during World War I. It challenges players to survive and escape the trench maze of your troop’s enemy. However, it is not the soldiers you should be wary of.

The gameplay of Trenches will remind players of Slender-Man. You will find clues before the monster gets you. However, what makes it more terrifying is the real-life photos of soldiers from WWI. It also uses audio jump scare to create a chilling experience. However, there are tons of jump scares that break the game’s immersive atmosphere. 

Get out of the trenches

Trenches is a first-person survival horror game that takes place in 1917. In this game, you play as James R, a soldier who found himself trapped behind enemy lines. However, unlike other World War games, your task is not to kill as many enemies as possible. Your goal is to survive the horrors within the trenches as you get clues to your freedom.

However, the trenches are made to be a huge maze. Trapped inside it, you will find yourself running inside the same area multiple times without realizing it. As it is a horror game, there are jump scares to keep you on your toes. This time, it is the voices of the soldiers who died in the war. To make it more realistic, the developers used real-life photos.

Trenches also used trench whistles—used to issue commands to troops in trenches—to add to the horror. The whistle offers audio cues to where the clues are. However, it also alerts the monster to your location. Like Slender-Man, you cannot kill the monster: you can only hide from it. It also doesn’t help that the game lacks checkpoints. When you die, all the clues you collected die with you. 

Easy on the jump scares

All in all, Trenches is a recommended game for those looking for a good scare. While the premise is typical of the genre, it provides a different experience by putting you inside the maze-like structure of war trenches. It also used real photos to create an immersive experience. However, the game takes the horror tones up a notch. There are just too many jump scares in it.
