Relive classic Sierra games

The Telwynium is a free adventure video game wherein you must survive in a magical forest as night comes. Developed by Powerhoof, this 2D pixelated indie game features early ‘90s style graphics and point-and-click gameplay.

Just like The Inanimate Mr. Coatrack, The Telwynium offers solid gameplay with just your mouse buttons. This time, however, the story is set in a dark fantasy medieval world and is more reminiscent of older games. Take note that this is Book One: Winter’s Dawn so expect the story to be incomplete when you finish the game.

Into the dark forest

In The Telwynium, you play as Pendar Calden, a hapless young man currently on the run with his friends after their poor village had been burned down by dreaded creatures. You’re  joined by other characters in your journey and the game starts off with you being the one on watch during your first night after the disaster. You have to stay vigilant and keep an eye on the surrounding forest.

The point-and-click gameplay mechanics here aren’t too hard to grasp. Your available actions depend on what icon your cursor changes to for the left mouse button. The Boot icon means you can walk to that spot. The Gauntlet means you can either talk to an NPC, pick up an item, or use it on something. The Eye icon signifies that you can examine something. Meanwhile, right-click lets you unequip items.

There are other controls but sadly, there’s no in-game tutorial. However, there’s a walkthrough file included in the game’s folder to help you if you ever get stuck on the puzzles. Graphics-wise, this is inspired by Sierra SCI0 games—such as King’s Quest and Quest for Glory. The descriptive text when examining items gives it much life and makes it a memorable point-and-click indie game.

A great throwback

All in all, The Telwynium is a great indie game under this subgenre of adventure and is highly recommended for fans of old point-and-click games. While it has no in-game tutorial for all of the possible controls, it’s easy enough to understand as you explore the game and you even get a walkthrough in case you’re ever stumped while trying to progress.
