Murder mystery visual novel
The Case of the Serialized Killer is a free adventure game that was created by an independent developer named AlexisRoyce. It is a murder mystery with supernatural elements. It tells the story of a popular illustrator who was found dead and the demonologist who is tasked with summoning her ghost.
Just like with Agatha Christie: Death of the Nile or New York Mysteries: The Lantern of Souls, players will go about solving a mystery in The Case of the Serialized Killer. They will interview suspects and investigate clues to understand what happened and find out the truth.
What is it about?
The story in The Case of the Serialized Killer is a point-and-click investigation adventure that revolves around the mysterious murder of a popular illustrator. Looking to find out the truth of what happened, a disgraced demonologist named Harold Ludicael is called to the scene and is tasked with calling out the ghost of the unfortunate victim. However, not everything is what it seems on the surface, with secrets unfolding at every turn.
The Case of the Serialized Killer features beautifully hand-made art using color paint. The game features over 20,000 words worth of dialogue and a story waiting to be told. Equipped with your journal, you will ask questions and inspect clues that hopefully will help you narrow down your suspect pool. There are also multiple endings—good and bad—that can be unlocked depending on the decision and actions you make.
There were the occasionally incorrect gender pronouns used to refer to some queer characters, which for a game that is LGBTQ-friendly, was a bit odd. Also, the story tackles some mature themes and subjects that might not be appropriate for younger audiences. Thus, some level of caution would be necessary if you are playing it with kids around to see.
An intriguing story
If you’re a big fan of visual novel-style games, be sure to check The Case of the Serialized Killer out as it’s a rather interesting one. It features an intriguing narrative that takes cues from various genres for its storytelling. It also features a colorful cast of characters and hand-painted art that is just nice to look at. Recommended.
