Pokémon Masters takes place in the artificial island Pasio. A team of Pokémon and their trainer is called Sync Pairs. Each pair has a special bond that has been tested over the years of trainer battles. Every trainer and gym leaders have traveled from their respective regions to Paiso Island with their partner Pokémon. Players participate in the Pokémon Masters League tournament on the Pasio Island. They get paired with a partner Pokémon. They also team up with other Pokémon trainers and gym leaders while forming a friendship with them along the way.

Players have to befriend other sync pairs in the island and form an undefeatable team. Fans of the Pokémon franchise can expect legendary characters like Red, Blue, Cynthia, Misty, Brock, Erika, Brendan, Rosa and more. The game comes with 3-on-3 matches in real-time. This is somehow different compared to the usual Pokémon battles from the previous games. Players can issue commands, as well as use unique moves and healing items. Trainer moves boost the stats of their Pokémon and even give a variety of effects. They can also command their Pokémon to unleash powerful attacks once the move gauge refills as time goes by.
