Play as a katana-wielding unicorn

PHANTOM’S REVENGE is a free-to-play role-playing game (RPG) from indie game developer Ben Saint. This action-adventure experience puts you in the shoes (or horseshoes) of Phantom Horn, a slime-infused and katana-wielding pony with an attitude. You fight through hordes of enemies across various stages with the power of your sword and your slime.

With its content and the variety of activities for you to do, PHANTOM’S REVENGE is a thoroughly enjoyable experience, especially for indie gaming fans. It’s somewhat comparable to Mother of Many or Limbo, but with a colorful and more graphic aesthetic to it.

A pony slasher with a story

In PHANTOM’S REVENGE, you follow Phantom Horn. He was once a simple pony YouTuber until an enemy banished him to the urban setting of Neo Milwaukee. This premise sets the tone of the story and justifies the theme among characters and environments. Expect wildly colorful designs with graffiti elements, as well as violence and mature language so be sure to manage your expectations.

As mentioned, there’s a lot of angst and awesomeness in its story that reflects in the dialogues and even the actions of its characters. A curious aspect in its graphics, though, is its use of characters that look like they came from the My Little Pony and Sonic the Hedgehog franchises. Despite its 2D pixel designs and colorful characters, there’s a lot of violence and gore.

Lastly, it’s not as straightforward as the usual RPG game. It doesn’t spoonfeed you with hints on how to progress, much less finish the game. Aside from the fact that it has multiple endings, finding which one of them is the real one depends entirely on the player. It can get confusing halfway through, with other players reporting getting stuck and unable to progress any further.

A challenging indie

Overall, PHANTOM’S REVENGE has the makings of a great indie game. It has a solid story and a unique and curious design to deliver it. The game features an urban aesthetic that ties into the story and the character design, which helps in its use of certain mature content for its dialogue and visuals. Its endings are for you to discover, provided you do find them. It’s a must-try.
