A mystery role playing game

Something strange has happened in Montfort village – many have been wiped out, and those remaining are going insane! You play ‘the wanderer’, a man with a strange past, and and a lot of curiosity, who travels to the village to get to the bottom of the mystery.

Visions & Voices is a 16-bit era looking RPG, and while the game mechanics are standard role playing game stuff, the occult story and adult themes make it more interesting than it looks. Like all good mysteries, you are drawn into the story and want to find out what happens. Visions & Voices is totally keyboard controlled, and while there is in game help (press Esc!), it’s not exhaustive, and you’ll have to work out things like how to fight yourself. That’s fine for RPG veterans, but annoying for others.

While the story is intriguing, the dialogue that drives it moves a bit slowly, and you can’t skip it at your own pace. Every line has to be read at the speed Visions & Voices produces it. Worse, conversations are like little cut-scenes, and you can’t skip them either. If you can cope with these restrictions, and the slightly generic graphics, there’s a lot of adventuring here, and some ‘super and uber-bosses’ to look forward to in the obligatory dungeons!

Visions & Voices is a solid little RPG in itself, but it’s unforgiving for newcomers, and has some annoying features that have shouldn’t be part of modern games!
