Greenroom by Spotify is a social media application built on Locker Room, an audio-focused social app developed by Betty Labs and later acquired by Spotify. The app was initially created to focus solely on sports-related topics. When it was rebranded as Greenroom by Spotify, though, it became a place where users can discuss any topic, hobby, or interest, making it more of a general-purpose, all-encompassing platform for discourse.
As mentioned earlier, Greenroom is basically a Clubhouse competitor. As such, its basic premise and how it functions are similar. Live conversations are done through spaces called “rooms”. The host is the one who starts the discussion and decides who gets to speak. When a user enters, he can request to be a speaker and become an active participant in the talks. Alternatively, they can just be passive listeners, with an option to chime in through chat available.
Greenroom also has what it calls a gem system that is similar to the concept of “likes” or “karma” on other platforms. It signifies one’s popularity and engagement approval on talks and discussions.
