Free-to-play visual novel

Cryptid Coffeehouse is a free-to-play simulator from indie developer nukes. This casual visual novel combines fictional characters like the Mothman and sets it in a modern, urban setting. This modern retelling brings a fresh perspective to the genre, which works well with its choice of visuals and music, providing an immersive and relatable story you can definitely enjoy.

Its unique take on a young adult story, mixed with urban legend elements, make Cryptid Coffeehouse a good sim. Be warned, though, as it tackles mature themes not suitable for younger players. You might also want to check out JOHN DOE+.

Meet the modern Mothman

As earlier mentioned, the main character in this game is the Mothman. It is a large humanoid creature with big moth-like wings supposedly stalking travelers in rural places, most notably in West Virginia. Here, the creature is presented as a dashing young individual and the subject of your slow-burn romance. This premise might sound outlandish, yet the flow of the story makes this idea work.

It also does a good job of creating a casual, urban-feeling visual novel. It mixes 2D character designs with photographs of real locations as the backgrounds. This creates a surreal experience of meeting cryptids and mythical creatures in otherwise everyday locations. From meeting gorgons at a party to crossing paths with the Mothman at a coffee shop, it adds to the story being immersive.

The dialogue and the story are kept simple and relatable, making it easy for young readers to appreciate. It also offers decent playtime, with a single playthrough running for three to five hours, depending on the story path you’re currently on. However, be reminded of mature content such as curse words, references to illicit substances, and representations of adult activities.

A top-tier indie visual novel

Overall, Cryptid Coffeehouse is one of those indie visual novels you definitely can’t miss. It makes use of a brave, new concept and makes it work both visually and in terms of storytelling. For the design options, it combines fantasy and reality in a way that makes it easily relatable for a wide range of players. If you’re good with non-wholesome elements from time to time, it’s highly recommended.
