An excellent free online multiplayer FPS reminiscent of Battlefield
Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Phantoms is a multiplayer shooter from Ubisoft. Taking place in Tom Clancy’s world of geopolitical fiction, the game involves fierce multiplayer battles that are strongly reminiscent of Battlefield 4, Call of Duty: Ghosts and even Counter Strike.
An online action game focused on teamwork
Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Phantoms is a modern shooter that takes advantage of all the latest developments in the field. Coming a long way from the “every man for himself” mentality of yesteryear, Phantoms turns the focus towards teamwork.
The main goal of the game is capturing points. You have to to move along and progress with your teammates, focusing attention on group objectives instead of just annihilating your opponent. This game mode is excellent (even though it doesn’t distinguish itself much from its competitor Battlefield), and makes way for great tactical battles. Note that you earn money and experience through the ranks, which helps you improve your character’s class and purchase equipment.
Unfortunately, the development team seems to have carefully designed the game to leave you constantly frustrated. While progress starts of quick, it’s not long before you’ll be forced to spend money to unlock good equipment, especially with the constant need to buy consumables (such as grenades that give you a huge advantage in the game), repair your armor, equip your character with runes, and repurchase the same weapons for different classes.
In terms of an abusive Free-to-Play model, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Phantoms seems to have combined some of the worst practices. Casual players may be interested, but those who prefer to venture towards competitive gaming will certainly be left frustrated.
Good playability that creates momentum
In terms of gameplay, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Phantoms is well designed and effective. The game is immediately accessible through clear gameplay, and it gives you an excellent sensation of firing a weapon.
The cover system is also modern and efficient, letting you hide behind any surface. Unfortunately, you’ll never be 100% protected: a blur system prevents you from seeing your surroundings when you’re covered, forcing you to take risks and to leave your head exposed when aiming or looking around.
Technically outdated
From a technical point of view, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Phantoms is below average compared with what’s currently out there. With rough textures and average animations, the game clearly doesn’t stand out. The special effects, smoke effects and explosions don’t make up for it either.
The advantage, however, is that it doesn’t need a very powerful machine to function well.
A great multiplayer FPS
Overall, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Phantoms is a successful game. Online FPS fans will enjoy it without running into any other serious competitors in terms of a free multiplayer action game, and although you may not be psyched by its poor graphics and its abusive demands to spend money, this game will undoubtedly suit the fans of the genre.
