Fantastic free video player
While the official standalone YouTube app for iPhone and iPad doesn’t have as many features as the Android version (unsurprisingly given that YouTube owned by Google), it is still a great choice for watching your favorite videos on the go, whether that be music, funny cat videos, or clips of your favorite movies.
Plenty of personalization
You can use the YouTube app for iOS to watch videos, search for channels, and comment. Playback is smooth and the video quality is excellent, especially on newer devices.
While you’re watching videos, you can minimize them in the corner of your screen so you can browse other content at the same time. There’s also the option to share the videos via Google+, Twitter, Facebook and SMS, change the quality, add to watch later, or add to a playlist (which can be private or public).
You can either chose to sign in with your Google account (which allows you to like and share videos, as well as comment in the app) or use the YouTube app as a guest. The benefits of signing are that you will get personalized recommendations in the What to Watch section. It also lets you access your history, what you’ve marked to watch later, subscriptions, history, and playlists with a tap or swipe of the screen. This applies across all devices you’re signed in on with your Google account.
YouTube also allows for voice search using the same interface that Google uses for its other products.
Excellent streaming quality
Playback is smooth and the video quality is excellent, especially on newer devices. The app is easy to use, with a well-designed and intuitive user interface. However, I did find it unresponsive at times, meaning I would have to press the option I wanted several times to get it to work.
The YouTube app also features some light editing options. This allows you to record video on your phone and tweak it, before uploading it to your channel while on the go.
The definitive video play
YouTube is still the definitive video streaming app for iOS. With its search functionality, well-organized layout and ease of use, it’s a great way to organize the music you love, watch videos in high quality without lag, and get personalized recommendations that will help you discover some fantastic new content.
