Get your gun and escape the dungeon

Exit the Gungeon is a spin-off from the game Enter the Dungeon. While the original had a top-down aesthetic, this spin-off is a platform game influenced by 16-bit aesthetics. Once again, though, the point is to blast away at your enemies.

On the surface, Exit the Gungeon looks like a retro-influenced platform game in the manner of 8-Bit Jump 4: Retro Platformer. However, it also incorporates the “bullet hell” gameplay of various titles, including Space Shooter: Cosmic Starship – Bullet Hell Game.

One gun against enemy hordes

Exit the Gungeon opens with the main character trapped in a dungeon. The goal is simply to guide him to the exit, armed only with a gun. Along the way, you will be attacked by hordes of enemies who must be annihilated before you can reach safety. Keep blasting, but remember to let your gun recharge when needed.

Focused on shooting

Although a platformer, Exit the Gungeon’s gameplay is based more on shooting than on exploring. For example, the first full stage is set on an elevator. You will be trapped in a confined space while you blast away at the enemies trying to gain entrance. If you survive long enough, the elevator will reach its destination.

A sense of humor

Like the original Enter the Dungeon, this spin-off has a sense of humor. The on-screen dialogue is full of jokes about the silliness of the situation — it never takes itself seriously. Players who feel nostalgic about the 16-bit era should appreciate the fond throwbacks included.

Short but entertaining

Exit the Gungeon is much shorter than the first game, as it’s more of a small-scale spin-off than a full sequel. Nonetheless, it captures the general tone and mood of Enter the Gungeon and adapts the mechanics for platform gaming. It can also be enjoyed by players who’ve never tried the original.
