Short 1980s horror game
Bonbon is a short horror game based around a child’s perspective and fears. Explore a house from the 1980s while a looming presence becomes more apparent.
Hello friend
Bonbon is a game which feels personal and compact. Beginning in a British garden while an unseen mother character yells instructions, it is clear from the space-hoppers and cartoons blaring on the television that the creator has drawn heavily on his own experiences as a child. Players move around the house completing simple tasks to advance the plot while a strange giant rat follows. Nightmarish sounds and sections combine to create a realistic impression of the strange world of childish imagination, resulting is some truly scary horror moments. Despite this strong overall design theme, Bonbon suffers from unimaginative gameplay and an extremely short length. A single run through lasts under an hour, with nothing extra to explore after this time.
Singular vision
Bonbon is an interesting little game which manages to achieve its personal story well while sprinkling in some effective horror. It should not be considered a full title or anything more than a brief insight, however, to avoid frustration.
