Fun and addictive word game

W.E.L.D.E.R. is a popular iOS word game that’s finally been ported to Mac. W.E.L.D.E.R. is fun and addictive and the Mac version also allows you to connect to players on iOS for some really entertaining multiplayer battles.

Lots of special moves to master

W.E.L.D.E.R won lots of awards on iOS so it’s nice to see that the Mac version retains all of the features and fun that made it such a big hit. W.E.L.D.E.R is basically a crossword puzzle but is an interesting mix of Hangman, Bejeweled and Scrabble! The aim of the game is to “weld” words in a word machine by creating clever combos and multiplying your score using gems and gold tiles. If you’ve got an extensive vocabulary, you’ll score highly on W.E.L.D.E.R. but you’ll also probably discover a definitions of words you never even knew existed.\nThere are quite a few tricky moves involved in W.E.L.D.E.R. – you need to master Group, Reverse, and Jump Swaps to do well so it does take some time to learn all the tricks. Like in Scrabble with triple word letters, you can use multiplier tiles to score more points in one go. There’s also an undo feature if you botch-up a move and if you feel that the hand you’ve been given is completely useless, you can use the “Apocalypse Swap” option to wipe the entire board once per level and get a new set of tiles.

More complex that your average wordgame

W.E.L.D.E.R. certainly takes more getting to grips with than a simple crossword or game of Bejeweled. There are the occasional in app purchase requests (“Gigawatts” which you can either earn by playing or buy) too which can be a bit annoying. Most frustratingly of all however, you can’t make words diagonally or backwards – only horizontally or vertically. This makes it very hard in general to score big as most words you end up making are only four or five-long.

Fun and addictive

W.E.L.D.E.R. is a refreshing take on word puzzle games. It can be difficult to know what you are doing at first but once you get going, it’s quite addictive.
