Puzzle platformer for the ZX Spectrum

Cyclus is a free puzzle game for PC made by indie developer Miguetelo. It’s a retro 8-bit platformer that has players control a snail and help it escape levels filled with various obstacles and dangerous traps. It offers two game modes that offer varied gameplay mechanics.

Just like with THE LAST ESCAPE and Yanga, Cyclus was created with the classic ZX Spectrum systems in mind. It features the signature 8-bit graphics and neon-like color scheme for its design and presentation. It also offers multiple control schemes that players can choose from to suit their preferences and play style.

How do I play it?

In Cyclus, you take control of the titular snail character, and help him navigate levels filled with obstacles and dangerous traps as he finds his way out. There are two game modes available. The first is Side A and here you guide the path and direction of his movement using boxes. Meanwhile, Side B offers similar gameplay, but you’ll also need to collect coins to unlock the exit.

Play the game with either the ZX Spectrum 48 or 128k, with the latter featuring in-game music, while the former, just beeper-like sounds. You will use your keyboard for controls. The O and P keys will be for left and right, and you’ll press the Q and A keys for up and down, respectively. Fire with your Spacebar, pause with H, and abort the level or the game with G.

The game lets you use a compatible Sinclair or Kempston Joystick if you want for a more authentic feel and gameplay experience. Before you give it a go, just know that it has a relatively short playthrough. It’s par for the course for this type of game. Nevertheless, there is plenty of fun and challenging gameplay to be had with the two game modes that it offers.

Yet another great ZX Spectrum game

It seems like new games are always being released for the ZX Spectrum, and Cyclus is a great example of a good one. It looks great, easy to learn, and offers fun and challenging gameplay. The addition of Joystick support is a nice bonus and contributes to the sense of authenticity that players will get to experience and enjoy.
