Free remake of a cult classic

Chex Quest HD is a free-to-play action game from Flight School Studio. This is an HD remake of the 1996 first-person shooter (FPS) that originated as a cereal promotion campaign. In this game remade using the Unreal Engine 4, you get to play as a member of the Chex Mix Squadron as you fight to free the Bazoik citizens against the slimy Flemoids.

Chex Quest HD essentially combines the 3D action of Doom and the art style and humor of Earthworm Jim 3D. With more characters and a split-screen multiplayer, it’s a fun game to enjoy with friends.

Be a Chex Warrior

In the original Chex Quest, players only got to use the Chex Warrior—essentially a cereal-clad version of Doomguy. In Chex Quest HD, however, there are a total of six characters. Members of the Chex Mix squadrons that are unlockable and playable. With that said, this game works in full-screen singleplayer or split-screen multiplayer, just like video games from decades ago.

Those who played the original game would realize that the HD remake doesn’t add much in terms of story. It retains the same five levels, translating to the same short playthrough, albeit in a much better visual quality. The gameplay is also much smoother, thanks to the new game engine. You can even enjoy the revamped HUD and how the Chex Mix soldiers move and dodge projectiles from their enemies.

However, players have noted the functionalities removed from the original game. For starters, the control mappings can’t be changed and saving is limited to certain locations only. Even the map, a helpful tool in the original, was removed in this version. Also, the AI for the enemies could use more work, since they have less aggro and routinely get stuck in objects.

A good throwback game

Chex Quest HD is a great throwback game for players who experienced the original and would like to revisit the cartoon cereal world. There’s a massive visual upgrade across the same five levels, and it now supports a multiplayer gaming mode. It regrettably removed a number of features from the original, though, but running through an HD remake is still worth your time.
