Break the time loop in this FPS

Deathloop is a first-person shooter from Arkane Studios. Here, you will play an assassin whose task is to assassinate eight key targets. The catch, the day resets, and you will have to do the same thing over and over if you fail. Moreover, your rival assassin is trapped in the loop with you.

Deathloop offers an immersive experience much like Dishonored. It is heavily entwined with the award-winning action game, from its power to its art style and UI function. Although, this time, it encourages you to embrace every slip up as it allows you to die and try again.

What is Deathloop?

Deathloop is a first-person looping murder game. Here, you will play Colt, an assassin trapped on the island of Blackreef. To escape, he must take out eight targets across the island. However, he must do it before midnight as leaving one alive will cause the time loop to reset and undo his work. Furthermore, should he die before completing his mission, he will start at the beginning.

Unlike The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, Deathloop’s time loop does not run in real-time, giving players time and freedom to eliminate the targets in one loop. Moreover, you can combine stealth, parkour, attack skills, gadgets, and powers like in Dishonored and Prey games. There is also a multiplayer aspect, where another user can take the role of Julianna, an agent tasked to protect the island and kill Colt.

In terms of aesthetics, the game has a quirky, albeit derelict, 1960s spy theme. Think No One Lives Forever, but with decay. What makes it even better is that despite having repetition as a theme, no interior or exterior location feels recycled. Although, moving from one level to the next is not seamless. One needs to log in to its servers each time. The pre-mission planning menus are also clunky.

Is the game good?

Deathloop offers players a unique and exciting experience. The game allows you to take part in an extraordinary mission, where time is your prison and also the source of your power. Although, its smart gameplay and naturalistic narrative stylings are hindered by lackluster performance. Throughout the game, players will experience constant stutters and frequent crashes and mishaps. Outside of that, however, it remains a stellar title with a brilliant premise.
