Multiplayer mayhem in Batman and Joker costumes!
Gotham City Impostors is a first-person multiplayer shooter set in the Batman universe. But rather than casting you as one of the fiction famous heroes or villains, it has you take the place of a wannabe – a thug or vigilante with delusions of grandeur, trying to play the part of Joker or Batman.
The dish-clothed crusader
The beautiful part of Gotham City Impostors setup this is that it allows for entertaining customization within two easily understood factions. Plus, the somewhat makeshift nature of each team means that as you build your character, their look is dictated by a selection of notably disparate elements.
Batmen don crash-helmets, skintight leathers, and ill fitted capes as they go to war against an army of makeup smeared Jokerz (yes, with a Z) who are armed with bizarrely comical, homemade guns. There are literally a 1000 levels of upgrades for your characters as well – all stuffed with unlocks – to make sure the process of perfecting your character never gets old.
We are the night
Of course, no amount of customization will save a game if the action isn’t fun, and Gotham City Impostors delivers in spades. It feels slick and fast, while its comic style ensures that – even when running on a minimum specs machine with 12 people on the map – it looks good. Which is never clearer than when utilizing a cobbled together grappling hook to zip you around the many maps with fluid ease.
Gotham City Impostor adds its own spin to some multiplayer classics, so as you take part in game modes like Fumigation – which is basically a control-point capture match – it manages to feel in keeping with the universe’s fiction. Providing, that is, you can overlook the fact there are six Bat-people and Joker-likes at war with each other.
Quiet, but still great
Unfortunately, the game has been out for a while so the player base is a little quieter than it used to be making finding a match a problem. But this doesn’t stop Gotham City Impostor’s still being a great, and free, game.
