Fight Lovecraftian horrors instead of demons

Doom II: Shrine II Mod is a free video game utility that adds new adventures for the cult classic action video game, Doom II. Developed by scumhead, this is the sequel to his first work, the Shrine mod, and continues the story about you fighting eldritch abominations instead of lowly demons. It adds various new content but requires the GZDoom source port alongside the base game in order to actually play.

From hell to unholier grounds

Doom II: Hell on Earth is a 1994 first-person shooter game by id Software and is the second game in the cult classic Doom franchise. It continues Doom Marine’s mission, as he discovers that the demons have managed to open a portal directly to Earth and have now enslaved humanity while he was away. The game was highly successful and spawned dozens of beloved mods and source ports by the fan community.

One such mod was Shrine, which was a total conversion mod that turned the Doom Marine into a new character called Tusk. He’s a humanoid being who lives in another dimension that’s suddenly full of more Lovecraftian-inspired monsters, and he must vanquish these intruders with the power of projectile weapons and the might of his fury. Shrine pretty much transforms all textures, models, and maps of the game into a more creepy otherworldly place.

In this sequel mod, Tusk returns and must journey through 5 new dimensions to find the source of the horrible corruption. There are 32 levels, with tons of secrets to discover. The mod also adds over 20 unique enemies and new boss battles to tackle. There are 20 weapons to collect and compared to the previous mod, this one flows better. However, while the beautiful netherworld aesthetic returns, so do the easy-to-miss switches and monsters.

Not just eye candy

Overall, Doom II: Shrine II Mod is a nice addition after finishing the first mod. The requirements are still the same for running it and you can continue to admire the fresh-looking world that this total conversion mod offered. It’s only a shame that some of the texture problems present in the previous mod are still found here and can cause you a lot of trouble.
