SNES emulator

Snes9x is an emulator for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and Super Famicon. Using this game utility software, you can enjoy the complete catalog from Nintendo’s classic console on your desktop computers. The app is easy to use and works flawlessly on most game ROMs. It also comes with a slew of helpful features such as saving game state any time, access to peripherals, and even filters to improve the graphics and the sound.

What is Snes9x?

Snes9x is like any other game emulator. You need to download separate ROMs from the internet and install it first. The app works on most ROMs and can play most classic Nintendo titles. Choosing to use the emulator also gives you the advantage of saving your game states at any time. You can access built-in peripherals, such as cheats, multi-maps, and super scopes. As mentioned, you can also use filters to improve the games’ sound and visual quality.

Opening Snes9x for the first time, you won’t see the main window. However, it does provide several menus on the status bar for loading ROMs, running emulators, and setting various configurations and options. To load a game, choose Load Game under the File Menu. The Open window will then pop up with the ROMs folder in view. From this window, click on the game that you want to play and tap Open and the game will begin immediately.

Snes9x is a standalone program, so it does not have an installation wizard or require other additional software to be able to run properly. You only need to extract its zip file to start the installation immediately. However, users may run into various errors during this entire process. Another thing to note is that, unlike BSNES, this emulator app is not cycle-accurate so operating is not exactly one-to-one compared to the actual console. However, it works just as advertised.

Should you download the app?

All in all, Snes9x is a good find if you are looking for a standalone emulator that works. The app offers high game compatibility and comes with various helpful features. It is easy to use and runs well even on low-end PCs. It is not a cycle-accurate emulator. However, unless you are an emulator purist, you won’t see the difference.

Snes9x is a portable, freeware Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) emulator. It basically allows you to play most games designed for the SNES and Super Famicom Nintendo game systems on your PC or Workstation; which includes some real gems that were only ever released in Japan.

Snes9x is the result of well over three years worth of part-time hacking, coding, recoding, debugging, divorce, etc. Snes9x is coded in C++, with three assembler CPU emulation cores on the i386 Linux and Windows ports.
