Chess-inspired roguelike game for PC

The Ouroboros King is a premium strategy game for PC by developer Oriol Cosp. It combines the strategic nature of chess with the unpredictability of roguelikes to offer a distinct gameplay experience. In it, players will need to build the ultimate army and take on an overwhelming foe.

Much like Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate or The Last Spell, this demo version of The Ouroboros King emphasizes strategic thinking and tactical execution to take on challenges and opponents head-on. With turn-based mechanics at play, every move will be crucial and dictate the flow of battle.

A deadly game of chess

In a nutshell, The Ouroboros King is a more engaging kind of chess game with surprise roguelike elements thrown into the mix to keep things fresh and unpredictable. Set during medieval times, you are tasked with building a formidable army using pieces inspired by the classic board game in order to take on and defeat the mysterious faction simply known as the Covenant.

The game features a clean and minimalistic art style that complements its gameplay. Utilizing both familiar and new board pieces and employing a one-move-per-turn mechanic, you need to be quick on your feet and make the right calls to defeat the enemy army. You can also use ancient relics that you’ll discover throughout your journey and various consumable items to gain an advantage in battle.

Defeat is pretty much a certainty as you play, but you have the reprieve of taking an alternate timeline and trying again. The path will expectedly be different from before, lending to a sense of variety for every playthrough. Now, it should go with saying, that this is a game with a high difficulty curve and will need some time to learn and master.

Deceptively simple

If you’re a fan of roguelike games and are looking for something different to try out, The Ouroboros King is an interesting title worth considering. Combining the genre’s signature mechanics with that of chess actually works well and it manages to offer a fresh and unique experience. It’s easy to learn but is actually quite strategic and complex in nature.
