Take on the ancient era
Old World is a turn-based strategy 4X video game wherein you must build a dynasty that will stand the test of time. Developed by Mohawk Games, this historical epic strategy game places emphasis on the fleetingness of human life, as every year that passes in-game is a turn for your character, as well. You must strengthen your own lineage alongside your quest to improve your nation, in order to continue the succession.
Create your own dynasty
As a 4X game, Old World is all about building an empire in the ancient era. 4X stands for “Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate” and involves economic and technological development. As such, the gameplay is similar to other empire games like Sid Meier’s Civilization series and the Crusader Kings series. While there’s mostly historical accuracy in the gameplay elements, you don’t have to follow that so much in your mission to better your empire’s life.
When starting, choose the nation you want and choose a real-life historical figure as your character, who will lead your people. From there, it’s all about carefully selecting what actions to take and which part of the world map you’d like to explore. Instead of moving every unit in every turn, however, each unit can now be moved as many times as desired until you run out of Orders—a resource for issuing commands.
You also shouldn’t just focus on external factors outside of your empire. There are 4 noble families in each nation, who are powerful factions that can overturn your rule if you don’t balance your favors amongst them. Not only that, but you must improve your own family by marrying, having heirs, and shaping their own future—as they will be the next characters you’ll be playing to continue your empire’s development.
The story of your clan
Overall, Old World may sound like another grand strategy but it definitely brings fresh perspectives into the genre. It lets you experience the art of crafting a legacy much more keenly, with its emphasis on character aging and internal and external affairs for your empire. With over 1,000 unique events that are actually generated based on your decisions, achievements, and past background, every in-game year feels dynamic.
