Build your own academy superhero and save the world
What if the complete roster of the Avengers and Captain America Civil War were high school students? Well you can find out if you play MARVEL Avengers Academy, a game that makes you Principal of a superhero school – a job that entails making sure that Iron Man, Hulk, and Thor do their homework.
Preparing your team of heroes
As a construction set, MARVEL Avengers Academy allows you to build your campus at leisurely pace. You have to build facilities to meet your up and coming superhero’s needs: residences, gyms, laboratories. It’s very similar to games like Cityville, as you manage your resources to efficiently improve your heroes stats.
The adventure game elements of MARVEL Avengers Academy have you recruit heroes. You then train them up and send them on missions based on the Marvel movies. Do not get too excited though: this is no action game like MARVEL Heroes. Missions play out automatically, and only really serve to gather you more resources to charge superpowers – think The Simpsons: Tapped Out, but swap Homer and Lisa for Iron Man and Captain America.
Young Marvel
MARVEL Avengers Academy’s game system will look familiar if you’ve previously played any game that combines construction and resource management. In fact, all it really adds to the formula are the comic book heroes.
If you don’t go in expecting action, MARVEL Avengers Academy is a successful game thanks to its framework and setting. Put simply, it’s fun to play with youthful version of your favorite characters from the Marvel Universe.
The relaxed side of superheroes
MARVEL Avengers Academy is the opposite of most comic book games: the action is only spoken, and all of your interactions are based around a few clicks. If you like the mechanics you will enjoy yourself, but if you want to feel like you are involved in the fight look elsewhere.
