Live as a witch in this 2D RPG
Little Witch in the Woods is a premium fantasy adventure that puts you in the shoes of a young apprentice witch. In this 2D role-playing game, you get to hunt animals, brew potions, and cast spells to help the other residents around the mystical forest — some are ordinary people while some are magical just like her.
It has a lot of activities to do, making it a well-rounded experience. In terms of its gameplay and graphics, Little Witch feels similar to Zelda Classic or Chrono Trigger. It even has a rich story and relaxing mini-game elements.
Your quest to be a proper witch
The first thing to point out with Little Witch in the Woods is that at its core, it is a coming-of-age story. You play as Ellie, a young witch sent to one of the “Witch’s Houses” scattered around the world. She’s tasked to prove her skill by helping the villagers nearby, with her reward being a formal witch. This creates a youthful, wholesome spin on the witchcraft genre.
Visually, it has all the makings of a retro game. It uses 16-bit graphics that have a dated feel to it yet it incorporates animated elements and lighting effects that make every part of the surroundings feel alive, whether you interact with them or not. It also makes great use of its music, which has a welcome contrast–tasks look simple but the music sounds fit for a big adventure.
Although it is an adventure, it is not geared toward combat and survival. You get to hunt for your potion ingredients but it’s rare that you have to fight for them, which means missed opportunities to use magic spells for blasting stuff. Still, it’s intended more toward creating a relaxing experience and it does so superbly. A feature to look out for is unlocking, meeting, and interacting with cats.
Like an afternoon tea
Little Witch in the Woods is a worthy RPG, even if it skips on big adventures and combat effects. It puts you in the shoes of a young witch whose mission is to help people, it doesn’t spiral out into something unbelievably huge. If you’re a fan of simple and relaxing adventures with a lot of simple activities to accomplish, then this game is a good piece to try.
