A classic fighting game reproduced

ACA NEOGEO RAGNAGARD is making a comeback for a new generation of players. SNK and Hamster Corporation joined forces to bring back this action-packed game along with other titles in the ACA NEOGEO line-up. The premium fighting game that fascinated teenagers at the turn of the century is now playable on modern platforms.

Unlike Tekken and Mortal Kombat, both of which have launched a successful series and adapted their gameplay and graphics to present-day standards, ACA NEOGEO RAGNAGARD carries on with the original version. While this appeals to nostalgia, some younger players find the game difficult to enjoy.

Deities and mythical beasts

If you’re one of those who were captivated by the pioneering 2D graphics of ACA NEOGEO RAGNAGARD when everything else was animated in a polygon style, then this official reproduction is for you. The popular arcade game at the tail end of the 20th century is revived for newer hardware, all in its original form. Intact and unchanged, the title targets former players familiar with all its aspects.

What’s more, it also attempts to introduce the classic game to a new breed of gamers and encourage appreciation for it. The one-on-one fighter lets you control characters based on gods and legendary beasts like Susano, Son Goku, and Lucifer and fight off contenders in a quest to dominate Heaven. As mentioned, it retains its original gameplay featuring the Aerial Battle System and Element System, which lends a nostalgic feel.

This reproduced title, with its untampered flaws and glory, could spark considerable interest among individuals who have come of age playing the original version. At least, though, if they are willing to endure the pre-rendered visuals and awkward controls for the sake of indulging in teenage memories. Unfortunately, the game has sacrificed many things in its intention to offer a classic and well-liked experience on newer platforms.

Nostalgic but poorly rendered

One clear lesson that the reproduction of ACA NEOGEO RAGNAGARD teaches is that appealing to nostalgia can only get a classic game so far. Although it is quite effective in that domain, this new version suffers from ill planning and execution. Its migration to current platforms would have been successful if modern practices were followed. It is an admirable but flawed attempt to revive a well-loved title.
