Free RPG gacha about humans and yokai
Xross Chronicle is a free 3D strategy role-playing mobile video game wherein you fight in a war against the terrible Yokai. Developed by Floppygames and published by LINE Games, Xross Chronicle is the spiritual successor of Phantom Chaser. It tells the same story of a world of humans invaded by otherworldly beings they call “Yokai”. However, this time in Xross Chronicle, you have new fully-voiced characters, new events, and an all-around well-polished system compared to the past game.
The rift has opened
Originally from a dimensional rift, the Yokai harmed much of the world and humanity couldn’t fight back properly until the Hunters—humans gifted with special abilities—came to the rescue. Xross Chronicle’s story then starts after the Human-Yokai War. By this time, humans and the Yokai that don’t want to harm anyone have now come to a truce. Hunters, especially, now work with good Yokai to suppress the evil Yokai.
The organization known as Night Watcher keeps the peace between the two species. You play as an amnesiac boy who joins Night Watcher in order to discover his memories. While you play him, you get to meet other colorful characters connected to Night Watcher and the Human-Yokai War from before. Xross Chronicle is a typical gacha game where you collect hero characters that you can use in battle.
What makes this RPG different from most hero-collecting games is that you collect two different types of characters: Humans and Yokai. The Humans are your Hero characters, who are the main fighters in dungeons and directly affect the tide of battle. The Yokai, on the other hand, are your support characters—all based on real-life world mythology—who can be equipped onto a chosen Human so that they can give their partner bonus battle stats.
Find your partner
During combat, your Humans have a few skills in their arsenal that will go into cooldown once used. Once their Yokain are ready to join the fight, they’ll fuse with their partner through the Fusion System, granting them additional power like faster attack speed and better defense without a time limit. However, you can also use the Yokai’s special skill—but this will separate the Yokai from the Human. It’s all a matter of strategizing carefully as you go through dungeons.
The combat system is pretty simple in this way, as you only need to grab 3 Humans and 3 Yokai as a team. The dungeon routes are linear, with just one straight path laden with monsters every now and then. The game even offers you an Auto-Battle function to make things easier. It’s the same with PvP, as well. But what’s great about Xross Chronicle’s whole combat system is that you can switch Humans and Yokai’s roles in battle with the Cross Training feature.
Humans can become support units while the Yokai take center-stage in the battlefield. This opens up more unique strategies for you and really deviates from Phantom Chaser’s image. Compared to the other, Xross Chronicle looks more polished with its 3D art and animation, character designs, and overall game design. While the highest resolution it has looks subpar compared to other games, the generosity of turning extra summoned characters into materials that can be used by any character really highlights the gameplay itself.
