A one-button reflex challenge for C64

Apeshit is a free action ROM for the Commodore 64 (C64) gaming console developed by Megastyle. In this casual game, you only need one button and lightning-fast reflexes as you guide a little monkey from tree to tree, collecting bananas and evading insects. Its simple gameplay premise will leave you focused on posting high scores, and nothing more.

Its graphics, audio, and hardware compatibility makes Apeshit among the new generation of C64 games to bring the authentic retro gaming experience to new players, same with Bagman Comes Back (C64 Version) and C64 Commando Remake.

Retro gameplay, modern features

Since it’s not a standalone product, Apeshit requires to have either the actual C64 computer or supported emulators like VICE C64 or CCS64. Once you’re ready, the game opens fairly simply, with an option to start the game. It also features a trainer option. By pressing F8 on the home screen, you get to activate cheat codes but you can’t post high scores.

In terms of aesthetics, it has everything you can expect from an actual 80s game. It sports 8-bit graphics, chiptune music, and has a simple gameplay premise. However, it still manages to be worth hours of your time because of its difficulty and simplicity, making it surprisingly addictive. There are no achievements and bosses; just you and a swinging monkey trying to post a score as high as you can.

As for the game, it’s incredibly challenging, which makes it frustrating for younger players although it feels right at home for those who’ve played actual games from the 80s. Not only is the 8-bit video moving too fast, but there are a number of obstacles aside from the crawling insects. Touch an insect and you’re dead. Jump onto a thin branch and you’re dead.

For the old and the new

Following the trend of indie C64 games making a comeback, Apeshit is simpler than most of today’s games in terms of graphics, audio, and even the concept itself. However, these factors create an addictive experience even if the only goals are to get used to the extremely difficult gameplay and post an unbeatable high score. If you’re a retro gamer or just looking for the next challenge, try this one.
