GIPHY CAM is very simple. It features over 40 filters and animated overlays, which you can use to add to your GIF. You create GIFs with your camera, and can choose to take either a short video or burst of 5 photos. Tap the record button for a burst, or hold to record video.

The filters are categorized. Basically there are a handful of Instagram-style filters to give you various flavors, and the rest are animated additions and overlays. There’s nothing subtle about them, with a selection including dancing cats, falling roses, teardrops, dolphin backgrounds, and more.

You can share your creation via SMS, Facebook Messenger, Twitter, Instagram, and email. You can also save them to your camera roll, but most camera rolls do not allow you to view animated GIFs.

Limited features

Unlike Vine, you can’t let go of record then hold again to continue, which limits your GIF creativity somewhat. Similarly, with burst, you have to use five shots taken in quick succession. You can’t combine photos you already have in your library either, like you can with Strobe.

The selection of filters and overlays is pretty weak. Some have a certain low-fi charm, but overall they are quite basic and you can’t use multiple effects at the same time. While you can save GIFs to your camera roll, GIPHY CAM has no option to view your previous creations. It’s not a social app like Instagram – GIPHY CAM is purely for creating GIFs that you share elsewhere.

Simple GIF fun on the go
