Translate Photographs into 3D Objects with Meshroom

Meshroom is a free tool that can reconstruct 3D models of objects in photographs. Once you import the photo, you will have a 3D CGI object to suit your needs.

From photograph to CGI

If you regularly work with 3D CGI objects, then you’ll probably know that things would be much easier if you could import images from photographs. Happily, with your Meshroom download, you can do just that. An open-source 3D reconstruction tool, Meshroom will examine objects in photographs and do its best to reconstruct them as D objects.

How does Meshroom work?

Meshroom has a straightforward interface, and any user familiar with the basics of 3D modeling software should have little trouble getting to grips with Meshroom photogeometry. Once you have created a new project, the first step is simply to drag photographs into the “images” section. The program will do all the hard work by analyzing the metadata of the photograph before creating a 3D scene that you can edit.

How many pictures do you need for Meshroom?

For a full 3D shape, you will need photos taken from different angles; around 10-20 will be a good starting point, although in practice, the more you have, the better the results. But bear in mind that more photos will take longer to process: you may have to wait over an hour for your object to be generated through mapping and meshing.

A useful additional to your toolkit

Meshroom lacks the masking features of rival Photoscan, nor can it recreate the human body quite as well as OsirisX. On the whole, however, it will form a powerful piece of any digital imaging toolkit.
