Frantic FPS action in the Wild West

What would happen if you take the Quake III engine and give it a Wild West look and feel? Answer: you would get Smokin’ Guns – an open-source Wild West version of the popular FPS game.

Smokin’ Guns, originally known as Western Quake, is simply a first-person action game set in the Wild West. It features all the typical ingredients of the FPS genre: support for multiplayer games (either hosted by you or using another Internet server), a complete arsenal of different weapons, a dozen different maps and several gaming modes: round team play, ban robbery, duel and death match.

Smokin’ Guns also lets you play one-player games against computer-controlled bots, although their AI leaves a lot to be desired. Sometimes your team mates get stuck when trying to go through a door and the only possible solution is to kill them – as ruthless as that sounds.

Fortunately, multiplayer games are much more fun in Smokin’ Guns. You can host a game by yourself or join any of the hundreds of servers available online. Games are usually quick and full of action; you certainly have no time to get bored! I especially like the fact that damage depends on the exact part of the body you shoot: it helps making the game more realistic.

As for graphics, Smokin’ Guns is not exactly an example of perfection. Scenarios, characters and objects are designed with simple lines and plain textures, though they are also very accurate. In fact, developers claim that all weapons have been designed according to historical data.

Smokin’ Guns is a Wild West version of Quake III with support for single and multiplayer games and all the necessary ingredients for a fun, action-packed FPS.
