Amazing Third-Person Game with Beautiful Artwork
In this beautifully crafted yet haunting adventure game, people who get too lonely turn into sea monsters and it’s your job to save them by bringing them back to human form.
Can you bring Kay out from loneliness and despair?
Sea of Solitude tackles the issue of mental health. People often say that having mental health issues is akin to fighting demons, and in this game, this phrase becomes literal. The story lets you travel through the mind of a young woman named Kay, who has been having troubles with her memory. The game shifts between a beautiful seascape and a dark, nightmarish world as she tries to come to terms with her trauma. Sea of Solitude plays out like a standard third-person adventure game. Players can control Kay to make her jump, run, and navigate her small wooden boat in the sprawling ocean. The gameplay is a mix of platforming, environmental puzzle-solving, and stealth, so there are lots of things to keep you entertained. Of course, we cannot discount the combative aspect of the game. Since the story is set in a fantastical world where people who become lonely and depressed turned into monsters, players can expect battles between Kay and horrifying sea monsters.
Sea of Solitude is not the first game to explore mental health issues. However, unlike some games like Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, Sea of Solitude tells a story that is painfully personal yet incredibly approachable.
A journey into your emotions
Sea of Solitude seems to delve into your deepest feelings and asks questions, even if metaphorically about how moving away from the community and social circles can for some, lead to them losing some of the characteristics that make us all human. It questions the importance of having friends that we can go to in times of trouble, to keep ourselves happy and content.
