An emotional adventure game in an island paradise

Call of the Sea is a premium adventure title for PC by Out of the Blue Games. Told in a first-person perspective, this game tells an emotional story of a woman who explores a lush, forgotten island as she searches for clues to her husband’s disappearance.

Just like Outer Wilds or We Were Here Together, Call of the Sea is a game that is all about its narrative and how it tries to convey it to players. They will explore an open world, search for clues, and even self-reflect as they witness how the story unfolds before them.

The sea is calling

Call of the Sea is set in 1934 and tells the story of Norah Everhart who sets out to an island east of Tahiti. She is trying to find her husband, Larry, who has disappeared while on an expedition to look for a cure for her and her family’s mysterious and strange illness. She must delve deep into this long-forgotten place to look for clues and find the truth.

Your journey in this game will have you retrace the path that Larry took while he was exploring the island. There are six locations spread all over the map to traverse. Each area has a puzzle to solve with the help of the clues you need to look for. Log all your findings in your journal and piece everything together to uncover the truth.

Throughout your journey, Norah will recount memories and conversations with Larry to give a better understanding of their marriage and bond. There are also two possible endings that you can unlock, warranting another playthrough. One thing that the game does poorly is pacing, both when it comes to the slow walking and the narrative that drags the story at times, which is saying much since the playthrough is rather short.

Deeply emotional but slow tale

Overall, Call of the Sea offers an emotional and moving adventure narrative about love and self-acceptance. The island you’ll be exploring is a sight to behold, and the moments of inner monologue make you feel more invested in the story. If you’re a fan of these types of games, you should not pass this one up and give it a try when you get the chance. Recommended.
