An epic Dao adventure with this free VN

Jiangshi x Daoshi (Episode I & II) is a free action-oriented video game wherein you get to encounter classic Chinese literature characters. Developed by Dendo-Denkido and published by Fruitbat Factory, this visual novel features two protagonists who end up teaming up after one of them saves the other. The game is divided into episodes, features various ‘90s anime-style action scenes, and full Japanese voiceovers—supporting both English and Japanese language options.

More than narration

Jiangshi x Daoshi plays out like a classic ‘90s anime more than a VN, with its cool action sequences in vibrant visual novel format. Accessing the menu while playing requires the right mouse button, as there are no toggleable options on-screen and even the dialogue box moves around to highlight the uniqueness of the animated storytelling. No need to manually save—the autosave feature loads the lastest chapter of the episode you read.

The story follows former teenaged assassin Luan Yu and his petite-sized teacher Daoist Ling Ling. The two met after Ling Ling saves Luan Yu from some monsters, and he becomes her disciple after he takes her in for food and shelter. Their adventures together revolve around learning the world of Daoism, fighting off grotesque monsters, and teaching the ancient-but-naive Ling Ling about the modern world. The graphics sometimes contain blood, gore, horror, and partial nudity.

What really makes this visual novel shine is its creative scene transitions and how the action plays out. Graphic elements like flashes of light, shadow silhouettes getting sliced, and the background blurring for running visuals make up the majority of the fights—easily highlighting how the animation just pops out despite the restricted VN format of semi-animated sprites and narrated battles. The characters themselves are nicely-drawn and really do remind you of the anime art style.

Cool art and cooler animations

Overall, Jiangshi x Daoshi (Episode I & II) brings back the nostalgia for old action shows. Not only are the fight scenes beautifully-animated, but the dialogue, character design, and plot of the story make up for a good adventure—even inside a free VN. Plus, the music is really good and always fits well with the scenes. The only downside to this is that it still isn’t finished and Episode III isn’t included here.
