What is the Internet?
The Internet is a worldwide, peer-to-peer, distributed, protocol-based, and computer-mediated information system. Its basic components are a set of computers connected to each other over a common communications medium, which can be either a wire or wireless, and a set of protocols for transferring information between the computers. These components are used by anyone to exchange information.
The Internet was created by the Advanced Computer Service of the United States Department of Defense, and is now widely used by private and public companies, organizations, individuals, and institutions.
The Internet consists of a number of different networks that transfer data between the computers.
