Velvet Assassin tells the story of Violette Summer, a young woman from England who has lost family members in the war and now fights back against the Nazis by working as a spy, using all of her beauty and guile to fulfil her missions. The game’s intricate story is structured so that much of it takes place when Violette is recovering from injury in a German hospital, with stretches of gameplay occurring during flashback sequences. The player alternates between helping Violette to escape from hospital, and reliving the past missions that led her to that point.

The gameplay of Velvet Assassin is based around stealth, and fans of other stealth-oriented titles such as Metal Gear solid will not take long to get to grips with the mechanics. Violette must hide in shadows, find disguises and use other tricks to survive. The game’s hospital setting allows unusual gameplay elements, such as the player having to find drugs for Violette to trigger her flashbacks and move the plot forward.
