Command a zombie army in Undead & Beyond
Undead & Beyond is a retro-styled arcade action game. Playing as Doctor Beyond, a mad scientist, you must use your own attacks, a legion of zombies, and items you’ve found to escape from the facility where you are imprisoned. Although the subject matter is grisly, the quirky character and retro art style give this game a humorous tone.
Undead & Beyond’s theme of commanding an army of undead creatures is reminiscent of Undead Horde. Its retro-inspired graphics will also appeal to fans of games like Serious Sam’s Bogus Detour. Although the game seems silly, you’ll need to think tactically to win. Stealth, combat, and zombie attacks will be important parts of your strategy.
Using every part of the kill
The basic system of Undead & Beyond is simple. You move Doctor Beyond around different levels of the scientific facility, avoiding guards. Your goal is to make it to the exit from the level. You have three tools at your disposal: an attack button, a revive button that brings bodies back as zombies, and items you’ve found.
As the levels become larger and more complex, you’ll need to create larger numbers of zombies and plan your movements more carefully. You’ll also want to make use of the various interactable items, such as classic exploding barrels scattered around the levels. The early levels provide a good way to learn the game’s systems before tackling the challenging levels later.
A light-hearted killing spree
If the idea of playing a mad scientist on a rampage appeals to you, Undead & Beyond is well worth a look. The later levels can be quite challenging, and it can sometimes be frustrating having to constantly revive zombies in order to keep enemies off you. Even with these reservations, Undead & Beyond combines chaotic fun with surprisingly deep strategy.
