A life line for you Mac
My MacBook Pro has started making a collection of odd noises. It began with a clicking, then moved on to a hairdryer-like hum, and now it simply sounds like a little jet-engine every time I turn it on until I – mercifully – turn it off.
It creates mixed feelings, sadness to see my stalwart companion’s life coming to an end, nostalgia at the time we shared, but – most of all – fear at the data that I may lose. Fortunately, I now have TogetherShare Mac Recovery, a virtual data safety net.
Find those files
This handy, easy-to-use data recovery program can resurrect lost data from corrupted hard disks, partitions, USB sticks, and other corrupted drives. While I hope you never have to use TogetherShare Mac Recovery, if you do it will be a familiar process to all Mac users.
Looking like any other Finder window on startup, the first thing the program does is ask what kind of file you want to recover from the failed drive. A word of warning here – believe the icons not the descriptions, as the text beneath the document and audio (which also includes video) files are switched. After selecting the desired file type you will be taken to another window to select the drive you want to recover from.
Once the drive(s) has been picked out, you can choose to perform a “deep recover” to scan the disk for the desired data. Scanning our corrupted 2GB USB stick took about five minutes, so a full hard drive could take a long time to complete – though this will no doubt be relative to the drive speed.
Familiar Finder interface
After the scanning process is complete, all files of the desired type on the drive are displayed. You can choose to see these in a list, icon, or preview format as you would in any other Finder window.
The preview option allows you to clearly see any recovered images, although the contents of other files cannot be fully previewed. If you have been carefully filing your data this won’t be a problem, but if you have dozens of audio and visual files with their original, default names, finding a specific one could be an issue.
To fully recover your data, all you have to do is check the desired files, click “Recover”, and select a new destination for them – though the full program must be purchased to complete this final stage of the process. Once moved to the location, they are ready to use.
Last chance
TogetherShare Mac Recovery is certainly a handy program to have if you lose your important data to a failed drive. While regular backups to your physical storage are by far the best method to ensure you are protected, this is a convenient last line of defense against the worst case scenario.
