Control iTunes from your menu bar

If you don’t like jumping to your iTunes interface every time you want to skip a track or pause a tune, then Synergy is for you.

Synergy is a tiny Cocoa application that places three buttons to control iTunes in your Menu Bar. These are Previous track, Next track, and Play/pause. You can also see exactly which track is playing at any one time, and even the cover of album currently playing in a floating window. Alternatively, if menu bar access isn’t your thing, you can specify hotkeys to control iTunes. Alternatively, the Synergy global menu also provides you with quick access to recently played tracks and playlists.

The advantages of using Synergy aren’t particularly spectacular. Sure, you save some Dock space but it’s debatable whether users will see fit to pay for an application that only does that. You can, of course, control iTunes simply by right-clicking or CMD-clicking on the iTunes Dock icon too. One of the other major downsides of Synergy is that if you’re a user of previous version, you’ll be asked to pay to upgrade to new major releases of the application.

Synergy isn’t a spectacularly useful iTunes application, but if you love Menu Bar access for your apps, it will definitely appeal.
