An elegant way to organize your DVDs

If you thought that iTunes is the only elegant and logical option out there for organizing your DVDs then you should take a look at Multiplex.

Multiplex is dedicated to DVDs only so it has a few bells and whistles than are lacking in iTunes. For a start, it’s incredibly elegant in touch and feel although that’s only the start of it. For one, it can retrieve DVD data such as film covers, synopsis, ratings, reviews and film info just by typing in the name of a film – all that remains for you to do is add the video file yourself whether it be DivX or a ripped DVD.

Multiplex is best viewed in full screen a little bit like using Apple’s Front Row. As you search your albums, Multiplex will throw up results in real time as you type a little bit like the Apple download site or Spotlight. This is because it’s integrated with Spotlight and takes advantage of any metadata attached to your movies – which is why it’s essential to tag them correctly otherwise Multiplex won’t find them. The quickest way to do this is import a file into Multiplex and then it will do the meta-tagging for you.

The best thing for me about Multiplex though is the fact that it can recognize external drives as soon as they are plugged in. As soon as your Mac detects the drive, Multiplex will automatically recognize the movies on it and they’re instantly available in your library – it doesn’t have to rescan it. This is ideal for someone like me who has most of their movies stored externally.

Multiplex is a hefty application that’s rather heavy on resources but there’s no denying it looks and feels great.
