Retro sci-fi side-scrolling shooter
Frontier Diver Progenexis is a free action game that was developed by Modus Interactive. It’s a 2D side-scrolling shooter that is set in a distant future wherein Earth has been overrun by horrific creatures from the deep after the collapse of the NT field that was protecting it.
Just like with JET’N’GUNS GOLD or RANBLE, Frontier Diver Progenexis takes inspiration from classic sci-fi side-scrollers for its game design and aesthetic. It is a different take on Frontier Diver, another game that was made by the same developer, with it being more action-oriented than the first entry.
What is the game all about?
Frontier Diver Progenexis is set in a post-apocalyptic world wherein Earth has been abandoned after the first NT-Field that served to protect it collapsed. As a result, the desolate planet has been overrun by horrific creatures that have emerged from the deep sea. Piloting a recon drone, EXT_078 codenamed “Hagfish,” you set out to explore the depths of END CITY to uncover its mysteries and horrors.
Throughout your journey, you’ll encounter various monstrosities that are quite hostile and attacks you. The gameplay is where the game stands out with its unique premise. True to its nature of being a recon drone, you’re not meant to fight enemies. Instead, you intercept and neutralize projectiles shot at you by enemies using the advanced scanner your ship has, trying your best to maneuver away from oncoming foes.
You also have to monitor your scanner and prevent it from overheating after prolonged use. You’ll need to wait for a cooldown when this happens, leaving you vulnerable to attacks. If you’re new to these types of bullet hell-style games, you might find the difficulty curve to be a bit high. Practicing and getting used to the fast-paced and frenetic gameplay can be part of the fun too.
Fun and challenging retro shooter
If you’ve been into a lot of the PS1-style games that have been coming out in recent years and you’re looking for more, Frontier Diver Porgenexis is adding to your list of considerations. The whole retro look and feel down and its gameplay is fun and challenging, to boot. If you fancy yourself some retro bullet hell action, give this one a go.
