Force external monitors to use 256 full color resolution

The latest generation of Macs are pretty good at allowing you to install and control a second monitor with relative ease.

However, there are some shortcomings in the amount of control you have – especially the fact that Apple have removed the ability to use 256 full color resolution with external monitors. Display Maestro gives you full control over any number of external displays utilizing the maximum resolution possible. Display Maestro overrides the resolution limits imposed by your Mac although the flipside of this is that it can expose your monitor to unsafe resolutions.

However, sometimes it’s necessary to force a higher resolution in order to play games in 256 full color mode. Annoyingly, Apple removed this option from Leopard so you can no longer manually the resolution of external monitors at 256 full color mode manually using the preferences windows. There’s nothing much more to Display Maestro than that – it sits in your menu bar until you exit it upon which your monitor will revert to it’s original resolution.

If you’ve been unable to play a game due to the resolution limits imposed on external monitors by Leopard, then Display Maestro is a simply solution but use it with care.
