Flexible extractor to unzip your files
iArchiver bills itself as “the archiver that Apple forgot”. While Apple might take issue with that, there’s no denying that this is a hugely impressive zip utility.
iArchiver allows you to create, extract and convert archives through a simple drag and drop system. The tool is divided into 3 tabs – Create, Extract and Convert. Any files that you need to extract or unzip simply need to be dragged into the extract target. The format that you want to convert to or from needs to be defined in the preferences. It would have been better if iArchiver auto-detected this but it’s no big deal, especially if you’re just dealing with files of one compression type.
While processing files, iArchiver gives you a status reading to show you how far it has progressed. Although the program is supposed to be able to handle multiple files at once, it does seem to get “confused” and mingle files together when it’s extracting at the same time. It’s also a little buggy when it comes to handling zip files that don’t feature western character types but overall a very solid extractor.
iArchiver definitely feels like something that should come bundled with OS X and the drag and drop makes it a pleasure to use.
This update makes iArchiver ready for Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and is recommended for all users. iArchiver will continue to run on Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and 10.5 Leopard. This is a free upgrade for registered users.
