An Audio Puzzle Game for the Visually Impaired

ChangeReaction is an audio puzzle game, developed by Draconis Entertainment, which has been designed to be accessible to the blind and visually impaired. It is controlled using the arrow keys on a computer keyboard, but the game has no visual elements at all. Instead, it is completely audio-based, with players navigating the game board and assessing their own progress entirely through what they hear.

Classic Formula

The game itself is a unique take on a classic puzzle formula, where matching three coins of the same type creates chains of explosions, which allow the player to build up their points total. The ‘Classic’ game mode requires players to try to clear the board before time expires, while ‘Loose Change’ mode adds bomb explosions, which scatter board pieces, adding to the challenge. Meanwhile, the ‘Pay Day’ mode flips the ‘Classic’ concept on its head, requiring players to prevent the board from being cleared.

Complex, Yet Rewarding

ChangeReaction can be difficult to get to grips with at first, even with the in-game tutorials, and the difficulty level may lead to some frustration early on. However, it is worth persevering with, as it is a challenging, rewarding game, which offers a kind of engaging, fast-paced experience that is not currently commonplace in the blind or partially-sighted video gaming scene.
